Rent or buy a suitcase for one trip?

When buying still makes sense

If you fly several times a month, or you have a specific recurring need — a rugged bag for regular field work, a cabin bag you'll use every week — owning outright is usually cheaper over a year and means one less thing to schedule ahead of a trip.

When renting makes more sense

Most travellers don't fly often enough for a second suitcase to earn its keep. A hardshell bought for one trip abroad often spends the other 11 months of the year in a cupboard — awkward to store in a typical Indian apartment, and prone to wheel and zipper wear from being crammed into tight storage between uses.

Renting also solves the mismatched-bag problem: the cabin case that's perfect for a weekend is the wrong bag entirely for a two-week trip requiring a 23 kg checked allowance. Owning one bag means compromising on every trip that isn't its exact size; renting means picking the right one each time.

The actual break-even point

A mid-range hardshell suitcase costs roughly ₹4,000–₹10,000 to buy. At current rental rates, that's the equivalent of 6-14 rental days on our Hardshell Spinner L. If you take one long trip a year needing that bag size, renting is cheaper for years before it would make sense to buy — and you're not storing it, cleaning it, or replacing broken wheels in between.

The calculation flips only if you expect to need that exact bag size on close to a dozen separate trips within a year or two.

A middle ground: rent for the trips that need it

Plenty of travellers own one everyday cabin bag and rent for the trips that fall outside it — a large hardshell for a rare long-haul trip, or an extra checked bag when travelling as a family. That avoids the sunk cost of a bag that's wrong-sized for most of the year.
